Turkey Trot Banquet 2018

The Montgomery Ruritan Club used the occasion of its recent Annual Club and Turkey Trot Festival Appreciation night to present its “Distinguished Community Service Awards” to two longtime club members, the honored memory of Everett Harrawood (1926-2002) and Darrell “Cap” Knepp.

Presenting the award (left) is club president Stewart Blake, and receiving posthumously in the honored memory of their father are Steve and Dean Harrawood and grandson Jeffrey. Everett Harrawood, a decorated World War II veteran, and long time club member and community volunteer, served as Turkey Trot co-chairman in 1989, and as club director for a number of years. His untimely passing in 2002 has uninten- tionally denied consideration to him and his family for this club honor.

Club president Stewart Blake (left) made the presentation of the Service Award to Darrell “Cap” Knepp who likewise has been a long time contributing club member and community volunteer, serving nearly three terms as a club director, a club shooting match chairman for many years, and is still a contributing club member, especially at festival time serving as the on-sight electrician.

Pictured here is the presentation of a check from Montgomery Ruritan Club President Stewart Blake (left) to the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department, (L-R): Tim Showalter, (fire chief), Trey Showalter, Kraig Knepp, Jeff Divine and Terry O’Brian. A favorite pledge of the firemen was repeated, “While we wish our services were never needed, we know they will be and we are ready to serve our community and its members in any situation” – the stark reality and danger of that pledge was realized on the night of Nov. 10, 2017, when one of their own, Kendall J. Murphy, gave his life responding to what was a minor auto accident as a first responder.
