Ruritan Remembers Glen “Fish” Spauling
The Montgomery Ruritan Club remembers the passing of Glen Spaulding who was a valuable
member of the Ruritan Club for many years and may have joined the club sometime in the early
1980’s. He bought the Stop and Sea Restaurant in 1986 and operated it until he sold it in 2015
after 29 years in business. He expanded the business adding breakfast and was known for the
famous Fish Sandwiches in fact that is how he got his nick name “Fish”. He fried a lot of fish
sandwiches over the years not only there at Stop and Sea but for the Ruritan Club.
Glen served as President of the Montgomery Ruritan Club in 1994 and he served as Turkey Trot
Chairman in 1999. He was very involved in the club activities and he was an individual that did
anything that was asked of him. When we had Fish Fry or dinners at the Ruritan Building he
was always called upon to get it all together. In 2021, the last year he worked at the Turkey Trot
he was in the Lunch Stand training his replacement as he was giving that up. But little did he
know it would be his last Turkey Trot. He was an individual that did much work for the club
and helped out in whatever way he could.
Not only did Glen help the Ruritan Club he was helpful to any family or individual that he knew
was down on his luck. Glen was never married but he was so helpful to those who needed help.
He took care of his mom Rose to the very end who was such a wonderful person herself. He lost
a brother in May of 2020 and Glen was such great help to Brother Lee Spaulding in the months
leading up to his passing. Glen was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Montgomery
and he was also very involved in his church and held positions there as well.
Glen passed away on Friday December 17, 2021 after a short illness with covid. He will be
missed in the club. We extend our deepest sympathies to his Sisters Susan, Barbara, Linda and
his brother Bob and all the family. Glen thought so much of his nieces and nephews and
considered them his children. We lost a dear friend with the passing of Glen and the community
will carry on his memory as that would be the way he would have wanted.
May He Rest In Peace!
