George Nolan was a member of the Montgomery Ruritan Club for many years and served as President in 1976, served on the Park Board of Directors, and was awarded the Ruritan Community Service Award in 1999. George was a faithful member of the Club and when called on he was always there to do whatever was necessary of him.

Obituary for George Nolan

Born: September 28, 1934 – November 4, 2020


George R. Nolan, 86, of Montgomery, passed away at 8:17 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at his home. He was born September 28, 1934 in Daviess County, Indiana to the late Clara Ruth (Feagans) and Lawrence J. Nolan II. George married Elizabeth (Miller) Nolan on June 18, 1955 and she preceded him in death.

George graduated from Montgomery High School in 1952. He then attended Purdue University and graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. After graduating from college George worked for the Soil and Water Conservation. He then returned to the family farm where he was a grain farmer and raised sheep, hogs, and cattle. He was a two-time recipient of the “Conservation Farmer of the Year” award. George was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, a former member of All Saints Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus 630. He was a member of the Montgomery Ruritan Club and was a past president.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Ruth and Lawrence J. Nolan II; wife, Liz Nolan, and sister, Rita (Harold) Schnarr. George is survived by his children, Lisa (Curt) Miller of Montgomery, Colleen (Jerry) Moore of Marietta, Georgia, Lori (Bruce) Gusman of Miami, Florida, Lawrence J. (Janella) Nolan III of Washington, Tim (Jane) Nolan of Washington and Julie A. (Brian) King of Washington; grandchildren, Nolan (Christine) Miller, Keith (Bonnie) Miller, George Miller, Jake (Taylor) Moore, Ellie (Rob) Kirkland, Maggie Moore, Zachary, Harley and Mackenzie Gusman, Jorrin J. and Lawson J. Nolan, Clarice and Conner Nolan, Kylie (Kyle) Hembree, and Beau (Jill) Sluder; greatgrandchildren, Ivy, Kendall, Brylee and Garrett Miller, Kaden Roark, Henry Hembree and Raegan Sluder; great-great-grandchild, Aaron Michael Cundiff.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Sudhakar Bhastati and concelebrants, Rev. Joseph Erbacher, and Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker. Burial will follow in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, 415 East Sixth Street, Jasper, Indiana 47546, or St. Peter Catholic Church, P.O. Box 10, Montgomery, Indiana 47558.
